The Black Book
Paris: Obelisk Press,, 1938. An Agon. Octavo. Original tan wrappers printed in pink and black, rebacked with the original spine and wrappers laid onto card. Wrappers rubbed, tanned, spotted and chipped. Front blank loose with evidence of old repair, short split to half-title at the head of the spine, contents tanned. A good copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Peter from Larry. Paris, 1938". Durrell also reinscribed the half-title in a bolder hand at a later date, "Inscribed for Peter Bull by his old friend Larry Durrell, April 1973". Bull was a British character actor perhaps best known for his role as the Russian ambassador in Dr. Strangelove. Bull has added his ownership inscription to the half-title in pencil. Presentation copies of the first edition of The Black Book are of the utmost scarcity. We have encountered only one other copy on the market.
