John Newbery (1713-1767), called "The Father of Children's Literature," is known as the English publisher who first made children's literature a profitable literary market. The Newbery Medal was named in his honor. He was known for his small-format books that fit a child's hand and for his moral themes that sought to show the child that he could rise in life by being of good character. Upon Newbery's death, his firm was continued by his son Francis, his nephew Francis, and his nephew's wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth, who ultimately published 310 juveniles and 210 books of other sorts, was the first Newbery to publish a thumb Bible?that is a paraphrased or abridge Bible, printed in miniature and decorated with pictures, for the use of children.
