London: Jonathan Cape, 1983 - Octavo. Original green boards, title to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco solander box. Housed in a bright blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A fine copy in the jacket, lightly creased and rubbed at extremities, tips a little nicked. Illustrated by Quentin Blake. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "Helen, Love Roald Dahl". This copy is also inscribed by the illustrator, "For Helen, Quentin Blake", with a charming original ink illustration of one of the witches cooking on the front free endpaper, with Helen's ownership inscription above, dated Christmas 1983. Winner of the Whitbread Award for Children's Novel in 1983, the book was adapted into a stage play and a two-part radio dramatization for the BBC, a 1990 movie directed by Nicolas Roeg which starred Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson, and an opera by Marcus Paus and Ole Paus.
