Philadelphia: Edward C. & John Biddle, 1846 - First printing of the tenth edition (tenth year of the directory), 8vo (8 ½” x 5 ½”), pp. (4), (1), 2-428, 18 adv on color stock with some wood engravings of Philadelphia businesses. Contemporary half green calf & green cloth, back in six gilt paneled compartments, green morocco gilt lettering pieces in the second & third, five raised bands, gilt filleted sides & corners. Very good+ clean copy with minor wear to the calf, sheets with natural age toning, clean, complete. $300 Provenance: Signed “Francis Wharton/ Feb 22, 1847/ No. 252 Walnut St./ Philadelphia/ Pa.” on front free endpaper. WHARTON, FRANCIS (1820-1889), American legal writer and educationalist, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the 7th of March 1820. He graduated at Yale in 1839, was admitted to the bar in 1843, became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat, and in Philadelphia edited the North Ameri-can and United States Gazette.
