Negro anthology made by Nancy Cunard; 1931-1933
London: Nancy Cunard at Wishart & Co., 1934. 855p., first edition, sepia plates and vignette illustrations throughout, maps (one folding), 12.5x10 inches, recased by Marin County binder & conservator Sandra Good in massive bevelled boards bound in well-tanned new brown goatskin, original titling copied in bright red raised letters cover and spine, silk and linen endpapers with leather hinges. Margins of the signed leaf, title page and p.1 of foreword are reinforced with archival tisse. Pp. vii-viii and 1-3 bear old scotch tape that mends old tears, edges show minor wear with a couple of half-inch tears, some pages have a few ink ticks in text, there are a couple of tiny stains. This was the personal copy of African American Communist journalist Eugene Gordon -- one of the contributors to the Anthology -- and it is briefly inscribed to him and signed by Cunard on a leaf opposite the title. Laid in is an 8.5x11.5 inch thermofax of a two-page letter from Cunard to Gordon discussing his use of the book in teaching, African issues, and the possibility of issuing new editions in English and French. The letter was clearly written during the 1930s, probably before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War but at least a year or two after the Anthology's publication. Also present are the detached original boards, original cloth panel with cover title, and a lettered spine remnant. The new binding is unblemished. The unique quality of the Anthology lies in its worldwide scope, distinguishing it in some measure from its Harlem Renaissance predecessors
