The Sundering Flood
Hammersmith: The Kelmscott Press,, 1897. Octavo (204 × 139 mm). Original cream cloth-backed blue boards, white paper label to spine and titles to upper board in black. Border 10; half and three-quarter borders; 3-, 6- and 12-line initials; chapter titles and shoulder notes in red; line-block map (on front pastedown) drawn by H. Cribb, Chaucer type. Ownership inscription ("G. Colquhoun") to front free endpaper, small nicks to extremities, label faintly frayed. Otherwise a marvellous copy in excellent condition. First edition, first impression. One of 300 paper copies. Described on the colophon as "the last romance written by William Morris", the book was published posthumously after Morris had dictated the ending to his friend Sydney Cockerell from his deathbed. A beautifully preserved document of Morris's peculiar fin-de-siècle mediaevalism, though at the same time celebrated as an important precursor for the modern fantasy genre.
