Opera] [graece], edited by Arnoldus Arlenius.
Basel: Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1544 - Folio (319 x 217 mm). Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, metal clasps and corner-pieces, spine in compartments and with two later leather labels (one chipped with loss), later marbled endpapers. Some early red ink underlining. Small nick at head of spine, lightly soiled, rubbed, a few unobtrusive very small wormholes within text, some spotting or light foxing, very good. Collation: *6 a–z A–z Aa–Hh6 Ii4 AA–MM6, Greek type, title in red and black and with woodcut printer's device, large woodcut historiated initial at start, initial spaces with guide-letters, woodcut headpieces, woodcut printer's device to verso of final leaf. Editio princeps, a wide-margined copy of the handsomely printed first edition in the original Greek, providing a comprehensive history of the Jews from Creation to the end of the war with Rome (70 CE). The printed work is taken from manuscripts in the library of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, for whom the editor Arlenius was librarian. The present copy matches the rarer of two variants (based on the spelling of one word in the colophon) given by Adams. Provenance: Jesuit College, W├╝rzburg (various ink inscriptions, one dated 1575); The Hon. W.T. Monson (engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown). Adams J352; Hoffmann II, 443.
