Joseph Acerbi (1773-1846) Italian explorer and scientist, undertook 1798 a journey through Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Lapland; and the following year he reached North Cape, which no Italian had previously visited. He was accompanied in the latter part of the journey by the Swedish colonel Skiöldebrand, an excellent landscape painter. On his return Acerbi stayed for some time in England, and published his Travels, etc. His account was met with much disapproval in Sweden, and the Swedish government tried to prevent it to be published abroad, however it was translated and spread all over Europe. "Uppriktigare och säkert sannare än Rosenhane tecknar en främmande iakttagare, Giuseppe Acerbi, Gustav III:s del i vetenskapernas tillbakagång i landet", [Lindroth IV, 26]. Bring 309. Schiøtz 36 a. Bibl. Norv. II, 5336. Skougaard III, 255.
