ORDINANCES ESTABLISHED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE AMENDED CHARTER OF SAID UNIVERSITY, GRANTED BY THE CHANCELLOR OF THE FOURTH CHANCERY DISTRICT, ON FOURTH MONDAY OF JUNE, 1871, AT WINCHESTER [caption title]
[Sewanee, Tn, 1871. Broadside, 16 x 9 3/4 inches. Previously folded. Light tanning and dampstaining. About very good. A previously unrecorded broadside that prints new ordinances passed in 1871 to regulate behavior at the University of the South, established fifteen years earlier by Leonidas Polk and the Southern dioceses of the Episcopal Church. Among other offenses, the broadside outlaws and sets fines for duelling, gambling, the carrying of weapons, destruction of property, the impersonation of state officials, indecent exposure, and prostitution. It also sets official rates for transportation and carriage of certain types of freight in the area. An interesting document concerning the early history of one of the South's premier regional and religious universities.
