The Library of A. Chester Beatty.
Oxford: Privately printed by John Johnson at the Oxford University Press and published by Emery Walker,, 1936. A catalogue of the Indian miniatures. 3 volumes, large folio. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges trimmed, others untrimmed. With 19 plates in colour and 84 in monochrome. Spine ends a little bumped, some markings to covers, discolouration to front cover of vol. I. A very good set. First edition, first impression. An enormous and finely illustrated production detailing the collection of Indian miniatures of Alfred Beatty (1875–1968), a copper mining tycoon who built up one of the world's greatest collections of western and oriental manuscripts. The cataloguing of Beatty's collection of Indian miniatures was originally undertaken by Thomas Walker Arnold. Upon his death in June 1930 the project was delayed, until James Vere Stuart Wilkinson resumed the process, including new additions to the collection. The manuscripts and miniatures detailed represent some of the finest products of the Mughal court painters from the 16th century onwards, alongside some of the work of artists from the provinces of the Mughal empire.
