n.p. ca. 1963 n.p., ca. 1963. Image 9-1/4 x 13 inches, matted and framed to 14 x 17-3/4 inches overall. . Horne, 20th Century British Book Illustrators, p. 231 . A meticulously executed depiction of medieval folk celebrating in a town square against a snowy landscape; above the drawing is pasted the title page lettering, here bearing the American publisher's imprint of Harcourt, Brace (the book was first published in England, by Wide World). Antony Groves-Raines (b. 1928) was born in County Down, Ireland, and studied at Cambridge, intending to follow a diplomatic career. He became, instead, a painter, illustrating a number of Guiness booklets and advertisements, as well as several books. "His early work comprised delicate line illustrations...but his style later matured and developed into richly detailed pictures...", of which this colorful, highly decorative image is a fine example
