The Subaltern's Log Book. Including Anecdotes of well known Military Characters.
London: James Ridgway, 1828 - 2 volumes, small octavo (188 x 115 mm). Contemporary tan calf, broad bands gilt to spines, large foliate tool to compartments in blind, twin brown roan labels, triple fillet frames gilt to sides enclosing a dotted roll in blind, floral cornerpieces gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Extremities and joints rubbed, tips bumped, a few light scuffs and marks to sides, occasional foxing, small hole to vol. 2 sig. F3 costing a few letters in the running head. A very good copy. First edition of this uncommon memoir of military service, mainly in India, one copy traced at auction. The work is usually attributed to noted army chaplain and author G. R. Gleig (1796-1888), whose celebrated account of service in the Peninsular War was called The Subaltern (1825), but the narrative is incompatible with Gleig's biography and in volume 2 (page 195 et seq.) the author transcribes letters to him from his family, addressed to "William". The author was commissioned ensign shortly before Waterloo, which he did not see as he was appointed depot adjutant at the eleventh hour. After a brief posting to Ireland he sailed to Madras with his regiment to serve in the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-18). There is a vivid description of the Battle of Mahidpur and of various sorties against Pindari raiders, and a rich variety of detail regarding cantonment life; the first volume ends with the author marching to Ellichpur to enter the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad. He was then posted to a recruiting station back in Ireland before returning to Madras shortly before the commencement of the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-6). [Attributes: First Edition]
