Speeches on the Affairs of West Africa and South Africa.
London: John Murray,, 1903. Octavo. Original quarter japon, spine lettered in gilt, monogram and 5-point coronet gilt to backstrip on front board, blue cloth sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Double-page chart of British possessions in South Africa over time, 2 folding colour maps. Small bump to head of spine, pale mottling to front board. A superb copy, almost entirely unopened, in the dust jacket with a faded spine and shallow chipping at spine- and joint-ends. First and only edition, "printed for private circulation" (title page), five copies only traced in British and Irish libraries, ten worldwide (all in South Africa or the USA), and an extremely uncommon survival in the dust jacket. Carnarvon was colonial secretary from 1874 to 1878, unsuccessfully advocating a system of confederation which he had previously implemented in Canada. His speeches "form a current history of South and West African political matters from 1874 to 1889, and as such provide a text-book on almost every incident of importance in these countries during that period" (Mendelssohn).
