No Publisher [1939], No Place - Oblong small quarto, brown stiff boards with cord tie binding. World War Two era photo album. Over 100 B/W photos ranging in size from 2" x 2.5" snapshots to 5.5" x 7.5" studio prints. Some shots described as being taken by "street photographer." 3 small color photographs of horseback riding. Other photos are notated as having been received in letters and cards. Also includes newspaper clippings, holiday cards and correspondence. Photos begin with grouping taken at Walter Reed Hospital in August 1939 and spanning a decade to early 1949. Most photos taken in Washington D. C. area, and include scenes of daily life, including shots captured while walking home from work. The majority of the pictures are of horses and riding, as well as pictures of "the famous Morris & Essex Kennel Club Dog Show" of 1948. This album likely belonged to Miriam E. Johnson who lived her entire life in Washington D. C. Miss Johnson worked for the United States War Department for 26 years prior to WWII, and during WWII worked in the office of the Secretary of War at The Pentagon. Charming album, nicely organized and annotated with names, dates and locations. Ms. Johnson was an avid equestrian and dog lover - she is often referred to as "M.E.J." in the album. Others who figure prominently in this album are: Wen-Yuan Wei, Lola Beaver (famous D. C. personality who now has a park in Washington D.C. named for her), and Marguerite A. Jones. Letters addressed to Miriam E. Johnson; Holiday cards; ticket and Program of Judging for May 22, 1948 Morris & Essex Kennel Club Dog Show; "Ken-L-Bits" publication (from Quaker Oats Company) 1948, with photo of Marguerite Jones and her miniature schnauzer at the dog show (original of this photo included in album along with postcard that mentions submitting the photo for publication); includes the menu card from the Princeton Inn.; 1945 newspaper clipping of map of Rock Creek Park, Washington D.C.; Newspaper clipping, wartime short feature on Miriam Johnson's horse "Sandra." Magazine and newspaper clippings on National Zoo. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
