[Vernacular Photo Book]. A Day At Boston Common
Boston: s.n., 1974. 9” x 9”. Accordion style binding. 23 pages with 52 black and white photographs and 3 pages of typescript adhesive mounted. Photos measure from 3” x 4” to 4 7/8” x 7 1/4”. Album very good plus with some smudging to covers, photos very good. Preserved in a fine protective case. With uncommon artistry, this engaging "homemade" photo book presents -- as the title indicates -- "A Day at Boston Common" in 1974. Belying the turmoil of the Vietnam War and resignation of Richard Nixon from the office of the Presidency, this photo book presents an unsettingly serene urban landscape. Its highlight is a sequence of photos showing a homeless man moving from a park bench to forage in a trash can, one shot showing his torso in the can, while in the background a couple hug and kiss. The photographer captured scenes of children playing, people laughing, a street bazaar [datable to Oct. 31 - Nov. 3), Hare Krishnas, musicians, another photographer, and several images of what appear to be the elderly homeless. We have been unable to identify the photographer "Bruce Marks" beyond his signature, but his streetwise photographic abilities are noteworthy.
