Hippolytos (printer's copy, with prospectus, inscribed by Baskin)
Northampton, Massachusetts: The Gehenna Press, 1969. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Baskin, Leonard. First edition with these illustrations, limited to 200, of which 100 were for sale, folio, approx. 41 unnumbered leaves and a suite of ten etchings, signed by Leonard Baskin. The Gehenna Press was founded by Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) in 1942, while he was studying at Yale University. Baskin was a sculptor, printmaker, illustrator, wood engraver, book artist, writer and teacher, and his work is often compared to William Blake, who was also interested in being author, artist, and printer of his work. The press closed after Baskin's death in 2000, and books printed by The Gehenna Press are highly coveted, particularly those accompanied by Baskin's unique illustrations. Some of their best known works are Sylvia Plath's "The Colossus and Other Poems," and "Crow" by Ted Hughes. "Euripides is the unsurpassed master analyst of the warring tensions in man's mind and heart... In triadic interplay, Euripides created the conceptual matrices from which have flowed our formulations of lust, chastity and guilt. Can there be a theory of guilt without Phaedra, a theory of virginity without Hippolytos? In these two... Euripides wrought archetypal figures of endless life. The Gehenna Press has embodied the monumentality of this tragedy in a splendid and austere new translation... by Robert Bagg the poet and classicist." (N.B., above quotes from prospectus.) ***DESCRIPTION: Original quarter adobe-red morocco with morocco tips, marbled paper boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, fore-edge and tail-edge uncut, plain endpapers; Centaur type (which was designed by Bruce Rogers), on pre-World War II Amalfi hand-made paper (left unused at the death of Bruce Rogers, to whom it belonged, with the paper "husbanded by the press for a book worthy of its use"), 19" x 12.5", approximately 41 unnumbered leaves printed in black and red, limited edition of 200 of which 100 were for sale, this one of the 100 not for sale and designated "printer's copy" on the colophon, which is signed by Leonard Baskin and also inscribed, "for Joel from Leonard 1987." With a separate suite of 10 etchings printed on Umbria paper (one printed in green ink), the paper measures 19" x 12.5", the etchings vary in size somewhat (most are just under 12" x 7.25") in a separate portfolio covered with cloth and matching marbled paper. The book and portfolio are both enclosed in a box with a morocco spine lettered in gilt, the sides covered in the same marbled paper. Original four-page prospectus loosely laid in, with the pressmark in red on the last page. ***CONDITION: A near fine copy with a bright backstrip with no sunning, marbled boards clean and unrubbed, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, delicate paper edges show no rubbing, and the book is entirely free of prior owner markings; the front free endpaper has a very small (about 1/4") spot of foxing and a horizontal crease, otherwise a beautiful copy, with high quality printing in the case of both the text and suite of prints. The prints are near fine to fine, a few have a very small bump to the corners and a tiny spot or two of foxing, one has a shallow diagonal crease in the margin, all condition issues contained to the margins, the etchings themselves are fine; the portfolio enclosing the etchings is near fine with a small bump to the lower left corner and a few spots of light soiling on the back cloth. The box containing the volume and the etchings is very good plus, strong and sturdy, with some slight loss to the marbled paper at the edges, the tail of the backstrip gently bumped, and some light markings to the morocco backstrip. Prospectus is near fine, a few shallow creases, no edgewear or tears. This work is truly the best way to read Euripides; near fine. ***CITATION: Brook no. 62. ***POSTAGE: Please note that additional postage will apply due to the size of this work, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.
