Large Antique Bird Print-LITTLE OWL-STRIX ACADICA-Audubon-1827
- From the extremely scarse 'Havell' edition!: 'Little Owl', Strix Acadica, male and female. The plate shows the owl having caught a common mouse. Hand-colored aquatint, etching and line engraving on a vellin type paper. Description: This print originates from John James Audubon's renowned The Birds of America (London, 1827-1838). This is the most important and expensive work on North American ornithology ever produced. Audubon's Birds consist of 435 artistically hand-colored engravings showing birds mostly in their actual sizes. The entire masterpiece took twelve years to complete. Sold by subscription only, the prints were sold in groups or parts of five which were later bound in large leather volumes. The first ten plates were engraved by the firm of William Lizar's of Edinburgh; when Lizar's colorists went on strike, Audubon chose Robert Havell Jr., a skillful engraver and talented artist, to complete the publication. The Havell edition, of which it is estimated that 175 complete sets were produced, is the first edition of this work.Artists and Engravers: John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, hunter, and painter. He painted, catalogued, and described the birds of North America in a form far superior to what had gone before. In his outsize personality and achievements, he seemed to represent the new American nation of the United States. Robert Havell, Jr. (1793-1878) was the principal engraver of Audubon's Birds of America. Condition: Fine. Some minimal age related toning and some minimal staining. Since this is one of the smaller prints from this series, the original larger size paper was made smaller to allow for better framing. Margins well outside of platemark. Very faint yellowing in the top margin. Storage location: TPC-P4-04 The overall size is ca. 19.7 x 25.6 inch. The image size is ca. 10.4 x 18.3 inch. The overall size is ca. 50 x 65 cm.
