1897 - This Benjamin A. Gould mini-collection includes 3 items; #1) Gould's scarce 1897 book titled Cordoba Photographs ; #2) an autograph signed letter (ASL) ; #3) a small card with Gould's image. Benjamin Apthorp Gould was a pioneering American astronomer whose star catalogs helped fix the list of mapping thirty-two thousand stars in the Southern Heavens. Gould also made the first determinations of the trans-Atlantic latitudes by telegraph; organized meteorological stations from the tropics to Tierra del Fuego and from the Andes to the Atlantic; pioneered in the use of the camera as an instrument of precision; and was one of the founders of the National Academy of Sciences. Black green cloth, half bound in black leather, library call number on spine, some deterioration at the corners, and rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine, otherwise quite good. #2) ALS (Corboda, Argentina) to "My dear Choate" [Joseph H. Coate?], 16 January 1878, 4 pp., re wedding of his friend, Laddie, his homesickness ("I came for three years, & it is now seven & a half since we arrived"), his scientific work ("I have eight large volumes underway"), death of Dr. Caswell, etc. ("Give my affectionate remembrances to Mrs. Choate, & tell the younger generation sometimes of the old gentleman on the Pampas." #3) Small card, 1-1/2 x 2-3/8 inches, etching of Gould (Daily Historic), n.d.
