Grant, inscribed to him by General Upton!Book inscribed and signed: "To/General Grant/with the compliments/of the/Author -" on flyleaf, 392 p, 3¾x5½ hardcover, Upton's Infantry Tactics, Double and Single Rank: Adapted to American Topograph and Improved Fire-Arms", D. Appleton & Co., New York, 1867. UPTON (1839-1881) graduated from West Point in May 1861 and was assigned to train the green federal troops around Washington. He distinguished himself in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and especially the "Bloody Angle" at Spotsylvania (May 10, 1864), rising to the rank of Brevet Major General. His postwar assignments included Commandant of Cadets at West Point (1970-1975). He authored numerous, influential military treatises. GRANT, Upton's Commander during the Spotsylvania campaign, was elected President in 1868, the year after this book was published. Flyleaf slightly soiled. Fine condition.
