Signed presentation from Dario on the half-title page, to Lt. Gen. Pedro del Valle: "To Gen. and Mrs. del Valle, as a token of friendship, from Mrs. del Valle's translator, Ruben Dario." Ruben Dario (hijo) is the son of the famed Nicaraguan poet and politician Ruben Dario and an author and poet in his own right. Lt. Gen. Pedro Augusto del Valle (1893-1978) was the first Hispanic to reach the rank of Lieutenant General in the United States Marine Corp and possibly the first Hispanic graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. His military career includes service in World War I, Haiti and Nicaragua during the so-called Banana Wars of the 1920s, and in the seizure of Guadalcanal. He was the Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division during World War II and became a staunch foe of Communism during the Cold War. Very Good (few minor scuffs front cover). $275.00.
