The Paper Maker: A Survey of Lesser-Known Hand Paper Mills in Europe and North America
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1974. Small quarto. 128pp. One of 175 copies. One of the most important and beautiful books of the Bird & Bull Press. The first section of the text consists of Morris' survey of lesser-known contemporaneous papermakers, with brief histories, photographic illustrations, and paper samples of mills in the United States, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Italy, and Poland. Numerous paper samples are bound and tipped-in, including a papyrus sheet from Hassan Ragab at the Papyrus Institute. The second part provides an index of "The Paper Maker," a periodical issued by Hercules. Minor wear to extremities, else fine in quarter-morocco and red paste-paper boards. Prospectus, typewritten bookseller's description, and two letters-one from H. E. Dotzert of the Lockwood Trade Journal to Ruth Lowry, June 15, 1937, and the other from W. A. Churchill to Dotzert, May 26, 1937, concerning a watermark of "G. Jones"-laid in. Bookplate. (Bird & Bull Bibliography A15).
