Original green diagonal-wave-grain cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers blocked in blind, black coated endpapers, Freeman's variant c (no priority). Folding diagram at p. 130. Ownership inscription to front endpapers and title page, ownership blind stamp to half-title. Spine professionally refurbished and relined. Spine gently rolled, wear to tips, small bump to upper outer corner of front cover, edges dust toned, short scratch to front pastedown; a very good copy. Fourth edition of "the most important biological book ever written". "The fourth edition of 1866 was of 1,500 copies. It was again extensively altered, and it is in this one that the date of the first edition, as given on the verso of the half title, is corrected from October 1st to November 24th [1859]" (Freeman). This copy with the ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper verso of Dr Perry W. Gilbert (1912–2000), the pioneering anatomist and marine biologist. Gilbert is most remembered for his work on the anatomy and evolutionary development of sharks.
