Paperback; English language; First Edition; 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall; good condition; ... genuine 1752 first UK edition (French original published in 1749) rebound in modern card covers; the modern covers have many marks and some water staining across top edge but the original contents are unaffected; pages have some light foxing but are in a well-preserved state; seemingly very scarce as a first edition; the author was a French Jesuit priest who spent many years as a court painter for the Chinese Emperor, the translator Joseph Spence (who occasionally used the pseudonym, as here, of Sir Harry Beaumont) was, among his many accomplishments, an amateur landscape gardener and Oxford Professor of Poetry.
