Some fading to ink, minor old staining, wear to vellum affecting last name in signature, tear to seal, folding creases. Countersigned by JAMES MONROE as Secretary of State. 1 page, engraved and completed in manuscript, docketed on verso. Oblong folio. In the late 18th century Congress made available large tracts of land in Ohio for sale to the public. This grant, signed by fourth President James Madison and future (fifth) President James Monroe-then Secretary of State-is for the "West Half of Lot or Section number five of Township number Three in the Fourth Range of the Land lying between the Great Miami river and the Virginia reservation"
