Constitution for the Government of the New-York Yacht Club. 1857.
New York: John W. Amerman, 1857 - Duodecimo (148 × 93 mm). Original red linen over light card wraps, title gilt to upper panel. Ex-Connecticut State Library with their bookplate inside lower panel of the wraps, embossed stamp through the first few leaves, inked accession number to the upper wrap. Folding coloured plate of yacht flags. First edition. Uncommon, just a handful of copies of these early handbooks to the club have survived. The New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844, probably the third such club - after the Narrangansett Boat Club (1838) and the Detroit Boat Club (1839) - founded in the United States, the earliest date for a copy of the constitution that we have been able to trace is 1854. 1857 was a significant year in the history of the club, being the year that the One Hundred Sovereign Cup, won by the NYYC's yacht America at the Royal Yacht Squadron's annual regatta in 1851, was donated to the club to serve as a challenge cup for sportsmanlike competition between nations, the beginning of the famous America's Cup Races. [Attributes: First Edition]
