London - Henry Lintot, 1731 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. An early edition of thisvolume of poetry by popular New Latin Poet. Johannes Secundus was a New Latin poet of Dutch nationality. He was active during the sixteenth century and was a prolific writer. He produced several books of elegies on his lovers, epigrams, odes and verse. Secundus's Liber Basiorum or book of Kisses was first published in 1541. It is a short collection of nineteen poems. In this work Secundus explores the theme of the kiss in relation to his Spanish lover Neera. it is a classic of the genre. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. Translated into English by George Ogle, as well as E Fenton and Ward, though Ogle isnot attributed. This is a first thus of this work. It is the first edition of this English translation by Ogle. This work has the poetry collection in both the original Latin as well as anEnglish translation. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and vignette. Collated, complete. George Ogle was an English author, known as a translator. He published several translations including the Epistles of Horace. Condition: In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the joints, spine and extremities. Rubbing is mostly to the head and tail of joints and spine. Small loss to tail of spine. Front hinge is tender as is rear hinge. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Christopher Rowe. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned. Scattered spotting throughout, heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall: GOOD..
