True Travellers. A Tramp's Opera in Three Acts.
London, Jonathan Cape, 1923. Square 8vo. Original cloth-backed marbled boards, paper labels on spine and upper cover; 4 full-page illustrations printed in green and black, one further full-page illustration and 10 vignettes, all by William Nicholson; light rubbing to extremities, free-endpapers lightly browned, but a very good copy. First edition, this being one of 100 copies, not numbered, inscribed and signed by W.H. Davies, with three minor corrections in his hand to the text. The Welsh poet and writer spent considerable time in the US as a hobo, published in 1908 The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp and this opera, which 'was to be produced at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, where The Beggar's Opera had been successfully revived, but the scheme fell through' (ODNB). This copy is inscribed to the English composer of several successful operas (e.g. The Immortal Hour, 1922), Rutland Boughton (1878-1960), which indicates that he was probably envisaged to compose the score for this libretto. Both Davies and Boughton had Shaw as mentor and shared his Socialist outlook.
