The Bible That is the Holy Scriptures Contained in the Old and New Testament translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and Conferred with the Best Translations in Divers Languages ... bound with The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments
London: Robert Barker, 1608. rebound to style, full brown leather with fillet inlay on covers, spine with raised bands, two burgundy morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt in compartments, all edges gilt. Spine faded to very light brown, margins of leaves a little trimmed not affecting text or illustrations. Quarto. "The Book of Common Prayer" was printed by Thomas and John Buck, printers to the Universitie of Cambridge [England], 1630. First printed in 1560, the "Geneva" version is so called because it was translated by W. Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson, and perhaps others, at Geneva. This Bible showed a distinct advance on its predecessors, and appearing as it did in more compact form, with roman type, and verse divisions, obtained speedy and permanent popularity. Between 1560 and 1644 at least one hundred and forty editions appeared of the Geneva Bible or Testament. Examination of King James's Bible of 1611 shows that its translators in correcting the Bishop's Bible were influenced more by the Geneva than any other English version. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James translation by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th century Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Holy Bible is significant because, for the very first time, a mechanically printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public. “Breeches Bible”: translated Genesis 3:7 as “and they sowed figge-tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches.” (This less precise translation was glossed in the right margin with a more accurate, albeit longer, translation.).
