De l'esprit de conquête et de l'ursupation, dans leurs rapports avec la civilisation européenne.
(Hannover, Hahn), (January), 1814. 8vo. Bound in a simple near cont. brown hcalf w. some wear. Some brownspotting. Old owner's name to title-page ("Hardÿ"). (2), VIII, 208 pp, 1 f. (errata). The very rare first edition of one of Constant's main political-philosophical works. Three other editions appeared later the same year (London, March and Paris, April and July). The work constitutes an exceedingly important work againt modern dictatorship, and a warm praise of liberalism. As one of the leading members of the liberal opposition to Napoleon and thereafter to the restored Bourbon monarchy, Constant caused great sensation with his political works. His "Spirit of Conquest and Usurpation" is one of his most famous and most important political works, and with the publication of it he becomes one of the first to view Bonapartism as a modern dictatorship. In this sensational and thought-provoking anti-Napoleon work Constant sets out to criticize the "spirit of conquest" (as a modern phenomenon), which has led to the formation of the "grand empire". According to Constant, this "spirit" destroys man's moral essence and contradicts modern liberal thought. The work is often yielded as being prophetic and nearly describing the Germany of Hitler. It bears a great resemblance to the dystopian world of Orwell's "1984", and it describes in detail what is wrong with modern man and the modern world. For Constant "Ursurpation" comes to mean the new, modern, manipulative Napoleonic dictatorship with its personalized and centralized power. In this work Constant warns man against conformity, outwardly as well as inwardly, and he speaks warmly in favor of liberal variety and diversity as opposed to totalitarian conformity.Constant also warns us against the anachronism of certain types of war. A useless was is the worst thing a government can expose the people to. With such a war everything will be jeopardized, -every sort of social guarantee, every form of liberty, every security, every fortune. It creates hatred and spite within the people and it corrupts the young generations. It only leads to destruction
