Santa Claus: "Is not a creature stirring, not even a mouse?"
New York. Harper & Brothers. 01-06- 1883. Double-page black and white wood-engraving, from Harper's Bazar magazine January 6, 1883, image 19 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches on sheet size 22 x 16 inches. Overall very good condition with some faint soiling (mainly in outer margins), light crease across left corner, one 1/8 inch hole along centerfold, little wear along centrefold in right margin and light abrasion along verso where the binding strip was removed. A particularly charming and scarce image by Thomas Nast of Santa Claus peaking in through a window, checking out the lay of the land, with two kittens slumbering on a chair. In a nice touch, the stained glass windows have an inset of the astrological sign Capricorn.
