Swolla (Zwolle)
Copperplate engraving of the Dutch city of Zwolle, as seen from above. With explanatory captions throughout the city and written in a cartouche on the right of the plate: 'Swolla diu celebris meruit virtitubus Arma: Quae Populum sortem nobilitare solent. Inde salutisera vetere pietate fedique In Tripolim recepi foedere digna fuit.'. The city crest of Zwolle is depicted in the top right corner. ca. 1582. This print is copied after Braun and Hogenberg (1581). Overall size: 29 x 38 cm; plate size: 23,6 x 32 cm. Good state. Some age related discolouration. Handlaid paper with a fold in the middle. This print originates from 'Lodovico Guicciardini, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi bassi (...), Antwerpen, Plantijn, 1582'. This was an influential account of the history and the arts of the Low Countries, accompanied by city maps by various leading engravers. Deys 2001.
