BY COMMAND OF THE KING OF KINGS. / (AT THE DESIRE OF ALL WHO LOVE HIS APPEARING) / AT THE THEATER OF THE UNIVERSE. / ON THE EVE OF TIME, WILL BE PERFORMED / THE GREAT ASSIZE OR / DAY OF JUDGEMENT... [caption title]
1774. A contemporary manuscript copy of a 1774 religious satire upon a theater broadside. Single sheet, 16 x 12 3/4 in., the title done in a bolder ink, followed by 49 lines of text and a clear, neat hand. The final line, indicated by a drawing of a pointing hand reads: "The above is a copy of a Play Bill which was stuck up at Richmond on Saturday the 4th June 1774. The Kings Birth Day close to the Bill for that Day." Verso has a manuscript note: "An Alarm to the Frequenters of Plays, wrote by a Religious Person." The text has been variously ascribed to Rowland Hill and John Wesley, but the author is not definitely known. Printed versions appeared, several in America, and all are rare. The text describes Judgment Day in theater terms: a "Procession of Saints in White with Golden Harps," but drowned out by failed souls, the music would "Consist chiefly of Cries, accompanyed with weeping wailing Mourning Lamentation and Woe." The theater seating would "Consist of Pit and Gallery only... the Gallery is fitted up for the Reception of People of High (or Heavenly) Birth, and the Pit for those of low or earthly Rank... The Gallery is very Spacious and the Pit without Bottom." Printed copies of this broadside, listed under "The following is a copy of a bill which was stuck up at Richmond... [etc.] are listed in Shipton & Mooney 42603 and Hummel 3003.
