HOWL
San Francisco: City Lights, (1956). Later printing. Wraps. Very good. 12mo. Original single-stapled wraps. Moderate toning, as usual. Corner crease to rear cover. Occasional contemporary marginalia, unobtrusive. Else fine: sharp, clean and tight. Very good. The important eighth printing (1959) of the original edition of Ginsberg's landmark poem, number four in the Pocket Poets Series. It was this printing that first presented the poem in its original, uncensored form as Ginsberg composed it. Earlier printings omitted the more offensive words (substituting ellipses instead), but even this did not prevent the poem from running afoul with US Customs officials, who seized more than 500 copies for obscenity, leading to one of the most important censorship trials of the 20th century. The successful outcome of that trial paved the way for this unexpurged edition. One of 5000 copies from this printing, but nonetheless, decidedly uncommon. [Morgan A3.a1.8]. [Cook p. 21].
