Remarkable pair of 2 autograph items, unsigned, (Obrenovich IV, 1854-1901, Ruling Prince and King of Serbia 1868-1889)
1895 - together with an Autograph Letter Signed on card from M. Duvellery sending them to 'Dear Madame', all in French with translations, in the first the King gives minute instructions for a fan to be made, decorated with a story in three scenes - Happiness, Grief and Misfortune - about a couple first seen alone, in the second she is found with a lover, and in the third her husband lies shot in front of her and her young son, between the scenes are to be painted 'cupids bearing the emblems of death', Milan describes minutely the clothes, the appearance of the characters, and the rooms, down to 'a large stone recumbent lion' in the entrance hall, this first item has an outline sketch of the fan and detailed 'fashion' sketches of the woman's and boy's clothes, the second has a detailed pencil drawing of the fan (though in the first scene, only the woman is shown), in the covering letter Duvellery explains that Milan's commissions were often bizarre, sometimes relying on photographs with the faces masked, he invites his correspondent to guess for whom the fan was intended, together 3 items, 7 sides 8vo., Grand Hotel Louvois, Paris and no place, no date, c. Milan was an able but headstrong and licentious ruler who secured the final independence of his country from Turkey in 1878. He married the beautiful Nathalie, daughter of a Rumanian colonel in the Russian service, and though he divorced her in 1888 they were reconciled for a time in 1893. He spent much time abroad until in 1897 his son King Alexander, in whose favour he had abdicated in 1889, recalled him as Commander-in-Chief of the Serbian army. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
