The Ettrick Shepherd's Poetical Works & The Ettrick Shepherd's Tales and Sketches
Glasgow: Blackie and Sons, 1840. Hardcover. Very Good. Two complete sets of five and six volumes, respectively. Early printing of the sets but not the first as per Garside and Hughes' "James Hoggâ??s Tales and Sketches and the Glasgow Number Trade." Original maroon cloth with elaborate gilt and blindstamping, yellow endpapers. Very Good overall. Cloth at heads frayed, corners a bit bumped and a few tips exposed. Former owner's contemporary boar's head bookplates on all pastedowns. Seven numbered pages of ads at rear volume of Tales Vol. VI not present; otherwise textually complete. Some foxing to plates, a few hinges starting. Vol. I of Tales has slight splitting of cloth near tail. Tissue guards appear to all be present. Spines show slight sunning, much less than most sets; uncommon as a uniform set. This set marked the first publication of the Scottish author's now best-known work The Private Memoirs & Confessions of a Justified Sinner under his own name following the less-censored anonymous 1824 first edition, which is remarkably scarce. Here it is the fifth volume of Tales, "Memoirs and Confessions of a Fanatic.
