Allgemeines Europaisches Bucher-Lexicon
Leipzig: Theoph. Georgi, 1742. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols. 458p; 348p. 34 cm hardcover bindings. Pagination does not include handwritten pages that swell the work to far greater proportions. Ex-library with bookplates and labels on endpapers. Bindings were once half-leather but little remains with exposed millboards and exposed cords on one spine. Tears, bumps, and staining. Pages within are clean and the binding remains intact and strong. A directory of Latin, French, and German texts from the beginning of printing to 1739. Such an ambitious cataloguing project is near impossible; however, the challenge is reflected in the handwritten pages that are bound throughout the two volumes, suggesting that that the work was not intended as a complete work. Instead, the Lexicon is was a living project for the owner to continue. As a document of European printing history, it is a spectacular project, and the handwritten pages demonstrate the committment of the owner who continued the project within its pages. In addition, the printed works are presented in three separate typefaces. A unique representation of bibliographical scholarship and a valuable collectors item for the modern bibliophile.
