The Inheritors: an extravagant story.
New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1901 - Octavo. Original sand-coloured cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover with large pictorial block in black, red & gilt, fore- and bottom-edge untrimmed. Housed in a custom made, brown quarter morocco solander box. Spine toned (old label removed), covers showing light signs of handling (small old red ink stain on back cover, front cover lightly rubbed), inner joints cracked but sound, one or two leaves a little carelessly opened. A very good copy. Title page printed in orange & black. First edition, second issue, with the corrected dedication (Harvey notes that "only four copies known of the first issue"), predating the UK edition by five weeks. Signed boldly by Conrad on the half-title "Joseph Conrad". Although The Inheritors is "generally regarded as a science fiction tale of a group of people from another, apparently parallel, world who call themselves The Dimensionists" (Locke) it is also related to Heart of Darkness (serialised 1899, published in book form 1902) in that Conrad and Hueffer - in their first collaboration - "satirised Leopold II [King of the of Belgians] as the greedy and unscrupulous Duc de Mersch" (Jeffrey Myers, Joseph Conrad: A Biography, 2001, p. 96). Copies inscribed by Conrad are decidedly uncommon. Harvey, Ford Madox Ford, A9a; Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, I p. 57; Wise, Conrad, 8. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
