WELCOME TO HARD TIMES - INSCRIBED TO KURT VONNEGUT & JILL KREMENTZ
New York: Random House, [1975]. First Edition Thus. Octavo (21.5cm); beige paper and black cloth-covered boards, with titles stamped in copper on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [8], 212, [4]pp. Kurt Vonnegut's copy, inscribed to him and his wife Jill Krementz on the front endpaper shortly after publication: "Oct. 17, 1975 / Inscribed on this anniversary - the 39th - of Helen S. Doctorow's birth / to Jill + Kurt with love + awe by the author / E.L. Doctorow (Ed)." Upper edge of textblock slightly dusty, subtle toning to board edges, else a tight, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $8.95), with some trivial wear to crown and a touch of yellowing along upper edge; Near Fine. Reissue of Doctorow's first novel originally published in 1960 by Simon & Schuster, the basis for Burt Kennedy's 1967 western film, starring Henry Fonda, Janice Rule, Warren Oates, and Aldo Ray. Doctorow, Vonnegut, and their families were friends and members of the elite coterie of writers who resided in Sag Harbor; Krementz, a highly-regarded photographer, took the portrait of Doctorow on the rear panel. A warmly-inscribed copy, connecting two titans of 20th century American letters.
