[Leningrad in the Days of the Great Patriotic War.]
[c.1954]. Portfolio. Original card folder, front with titles gilt and woodcut illustration. Single text bifolium and 18 woodcut plates within. Covers a little rubbed and spotted, the plates entirely clean. Very good condition overall. A handsome and scarce survival, this complete portfolio containing 18 large woodcuts of Leningrad during the Second World War by Russian-Jewish artist Solomon Iudovin (Yudovin in Yiddish - 1892-1954). He had been a peer of Marc Chagal in St Petersberg, though dedicated his art to more political and ethnographic themes, and the perfection of the woodcut technique. During the Second World War he lived in besieged St Petersburg and produced this portofolio, his last great work.
