The Hotchkiss Single-Barrel Rapid-Firing Gun: A Description of the System
Paris: Printed for Private Circulation (by Hotchkiss et Cie.), 1884. Cloth. Very Good. The 1884 1st (and undoubtedly only) edition of this very uncommon company-issued monograph on the Hotchkiss single-barrel rapid-firing gun. Published with 11 plates, including 4 folding and 7 original albumen photographs mounted on stiff card stock. Original green cloth lettered in bright, unflecked gilt; very light shelf wear, small losses along the edges of the endpapers. The hinges are a little tender but the binding remains strong and sound. A solid, easily VG copy. 1963 gift inscription at the half-title from a Hotchkiss descendant (Berkeley Hotchkiss Edwards) to the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut). The book essentially is a detailed description of the weapon which, with minor improvements, became the standard field piece for many armies. Hotchkiss et Cie. was founded by American engineer Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1867, with a factory in Rodez, France and later in Saint-Denis, outisde Paris. The company prospered during the Franco-Prussian War and from later sales to the US government (Hotchkiss artillery was employed at Wounded Knee). By the turn of the century, Hotchkiss et Cie expanded into an automobile business. This volume, written by the company's chairman, was intended for market purposes. (OCLC locates only 3 copies in the United States: at the NYPL, the US Navy and Princeton).
