The Quality of Life [Signed by both Michener and Wyeth and Complete with the Scarce Insert]
Philadelphia: Girard Bank, 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. An EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE JAMES MICHENER ITEM, being a Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of The Quality of Life (spine tail moderately bumped), in a Fine slipcase (minor corner wear -- no dust jacket, as issued), SIGNED BY JAMES A. MICHENER AND SIGNED BY JAMIE B. WYETH [also known as James B. Wyeth] on the title page where Michener has inscribed the book to E. H. Smoker [presumably the E. H. Smoker who served as a Director of Girard Trust Bank and President of The United Gas Improvement Co. (later UGI Corporation) of Philadelphia], COMPLETE WITH THE GIRARD COMPANY INSERT -- which shows the President's signature in facsimile; a work commissioned by The Girard Company for issuance in connection with its 1969 Annual Report and illustrated with nine color reproductions of paintings by James B. Wyeth (the third generation of Wyeth Artists following his Grandfather N. C. Wyeth and his father Andrew Wyeth). The Bank saw the commissioning and issuance of the work (in which Michener was given a free hand to express his own views) as an act of good corporate citizenship which they believed required "the stimulation of public interest and concern for the major issues and problems of our day." Michener wrote the book's Introduction as well as sections titled "Saving the City", "Adjusting to Race", "Education", "Youth", "Communications", "Preserving Our Environment", and "The Challenge". [A later, slightly expanded, edition of the work was published by J.B. Lippincott Company, 1970.] The Bank received over 5,000 laudatory letters for its innovation which also was saluted by business and general news media around the world. As the book was not called to be signed, copies signed by either Michener or Wyeth are not common and copies signed by both the Author James A. Michener and by Jamie B. Wyeth are rather scarce indeed. Copies signed by both and complete with the scarce Girard Company Insert are even scarcer still. A Fine copy of this notable effort at good corporate citizenship, SIGNED BY JAMES A. MICHENER AND BY JAMIE B. WYETH, COMPLETE WITH THE PUBLISHER'S [THE GIRARD COMPANY] INSERT. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.
