Red cloth spine with marbled papers. With stamp of W.G. Collett on ffep. Laid in to red cloth slipcase with paper label on upper cover. 86 images, most with manuscript captions in ink, the largest measuring 9-3/8 x 7 in, plus five postcards. 10-7/8 x 8-1/8 inches. Despatched to East Africa in 1915, HMS Hyacinth took part of the blockade of SMS Königsberg early the next year. There are two images of the Königsberg, before and after being destroyed. In addition, there are a handful of shots of the crew of the Hyacinth. In January 1917, she was stationed off Tanganyika, acting as a store ship for the RAF. It was during this time that the majority of these images would have been purchased as many are stamped on the verso and dated 1917. Most of the shots are of Dar es Salaam but there are others of Morogoro, Tanga, Tengeni, Kilossa and Kimamba. Later in the album, there are 24 images of Zanzibar, showing Coopers Institute, the Old Sultan's Palace, the lighthouse, native quarters, the signal station and the sea fort. Both Walther Dobbertin and Carl Vincenti's images are among the professional photographs included here. They were two of the most prominent photographers working in the East Africa at that time.
