Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1841. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes, 8vo, pp viii, (9)-424; vii, (7)-47, with numerous engraved illustrations (most with original tissue guards) and a folding map. Publisher's cloth boards with Mayan design in gilt. Some minor chipping to cloth at spine ends, top and bottom edges rubbed/worn, some spots of insect damage to front board on Volume I. Contents sound and clean, with minimal foxing; overall a very good, unrestored set of this classic and important work on Central America and Mayan archaeology. Stephens and his friend Frederick Catherwood traveled nearly 3000 miles, visiting 44 mayan ruins, many of which had never been explored before, and which are beautifully depicted by Catherwood's fine illustrations. Stephens also includes accounts of native customs, ceremonies, etc. Sabin 91297; Hill 1636; Smith S146.
