Second. hardcover. very good(+). 1 copper- engraved folding plate. 2 volumes, 2pp + 28pp advertisement + 90 page "Histoire Abregee de l'Electricite" and a 12 pp preface . 245 + 350 pages (inluding index). 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines with red leather labels, corners rubbed. Paris: Durand, 1756. Second French edition. Franklin's major scientific work, considered "the most important scientific book of eighteenth-century America" (PMM 199). Very good (+). First published in London, 1751, here translated by M. D'Alibard. with a 12 page preface and 90 page history of electricity by the translators who themselves duplicated his experiments. Includes Franklin's theories of "electrical matter" and his identification of lightning with electricity, as well as the use of metal rods as conductors to disarm an electrically charged cloud. The experiments detailed herein were performed for the king of France after publication of this volume, and in two supplemental volumes (1753, 1754). t
