1799 1ed Missionary Voyages to South Sea Pacific TAHITI Duff Fiji MAPS Brazil
London : Printed for T. Chapman, No. 151, Fleet-Street, By T. Gillet, Salisbury-Square, 1799. First edition. - 1799 1ed Missionary Voyages to South Sea Pacific TAHITI Duff Fiji MAPS Brazil A rare, first edition account of the first missionary voyage to the South Pacific. ‘The Duff’ set sail for Tahiti in 1796 but stopped at various other islands including Tonga and the Marquesas. This collection of islands is often referred to as ‘The Duff Group’, which was discovered amongst the Santa Cruz islands. The work was written by a collection of hands including William Wilson, Samuel Greatheed, James Morrison, and others. The ‘Hill Catalogue’ says of this work, The voyage of the Duff was undertaken for the purpose of establishing a mission in Tahiti, and a settlement of 25 persons was formed. [Due to civil wars] they were forced to flee to Australia, though they returned in 1815. Apart from the missionary interest of this account, the voyagers made many important discoveries of islands.A new group of islands, the Duff Group, was discovered among the Santa Cruz islands. On the outward voyage, the expedition visited Rio de Janiero. The narrative is fresh, though sometimes naive, and provides a glimpse of everyday life on the islands that the mariner or naturalist didn't consider worth reporting."
