L' Architecture et Art de Bien Bastir
Paris: Jaques Keruer, 1553. First French Language Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1553. First French language edition. Hardcover, folio (34 cm; 13.5 in), 18th C. leather-backed paper-covered boards, probably a German binding, (16), 228 pp (ie 230 pp.) paginated on rectos only, collated complete. A very good copy; binding has some rubbing and corner wear, light wear and rubbing to leather spine, contents show minor ex-library marks: discrete 'withdrawn' stamp on pastedown, perforated stamp to title page, two faint ink stamps to Aii. Contents are largely very good, endpapers showing offsetting, foxing, staining, some dark brown ink splatters to lower third of fore-edge of text block that occasionally bleeds into the margins by less than a millimeter, faint yellowish dampstain to top outer corner of pages to p. 15, lessening to nothing, occasional faint marginal dampstain to a few scattered pages, possibly lacking rear flyleaf; has woodcut title page, verso of which is woodcut portrait of Alberti, colophon and woodcut tailpiece. Illustrated throughout with woodcut vignettes and full page plates. Early double ruled brown ink marginal lines, now a bit faded, to the whole of the text, in Renaissance style. A nice clean copy of the first French edition of Alberti's masterpiece of architectural theory and practice. Brunet I, 131; Adams A490.
