The Ballroom of Romance (Signed copy)
London: The Bodley Head, 1972. First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13.5cm, 269pp. Signed directly to the title page by William Trevor. This is the Irish author's second collection of short stories. From the dustwrapper, "In the space of twelve stories we meet an apparently random sample of humanity, children and adults, rich and poor, single and married, straight and kinky, good-looking and ugly - in short, a streetful of passing faces. The art of William Trevor lies in revealing, beneath the intriguing variety, their, and our, common predicament: the search for the right balance netween love and illusion, daring and timidity. Tragically, or comically, sometimes both, the actors in most of these stories come either to grief or to terms with the laws of equilibrium. Some dance alone, others change partners, others waltz stiffly on in immutable couples. It depends on the colour of the lighting whether you see it as a ballroom of romance or a third-rate dance-hall." The stories are: 1. Access to the Children; 2. Nice Day at School; 3. The Ballroom of Romance; 4. The Forty-seventh Saturday; 5. A Happy Family; 6. Going Home; 7. An Evening with John Joe Dempsey; 8. The Mark-2 Wife; 9. The Grass Widows; 10. A Choice of Butchers;, 11. Kinkies; 12. O Fat White Woman. Condition: This copy is in very good condition. The dustwrapper is in a protective sleeve and has not been price-clipped (though a biro stroke is through the price). It has some very mild tanning to the extreme top edge but is otherwise in excellent condition. The book is in an equally good state, with clean pages and secure binding though there are a few speckles of foxing and light dusting to the top edge. There is one small scar to the top outer corner of the ffep where a price-sticker has been removed and there is a little ghosting to the cloth of the spine from the dustwrapper. Overall, a super copy. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS. MANY THANKS.. Signed by The Author. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/Very Good.
