A Quaint Treatise on "Flees, and the Art of Artyfichall Flee Making"
John B. Alden, London - 1876, 1st printing, Second issue. () Very good. [i-ix],x-xiii,1-91pp. Large quarto. Original publisher's green cloth with elaborate gilt and black piscatorial design and titles to front board. Gilt designs (a fish, 2 mayflies, and a lily pad) and titles to spine. Discrete professional restoration to spine and corners. Some foxing throughout. A.e.g. Page rippled where photograph of Aldam is mounted. Two lithographed plates. Complete with all flies and tying materials present on 6 leaves (22 sunken mounts). Flies and tying materials fresh and unblemished. Second issue but with uncommon, variant cabinet photograph of Aldam (with hand on head and book resting vertically) affixed to recto of dedication leaf. This page is signed by Aldam "Yours Faithfully, W.H. Aldam." Westwood & Satchell 3. A very good copy of the first fishing book to include examples of hand-tied flies. The publishing history of this title is complicated, with this being the second issue (includes multicoloured, serrated tabs to affix flies) of an approximate printing run of 200 copies. The flies contained in this copy are exceptionally nice, especially the final two mayflies. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
