The First Afghan War and its Causes.
London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1879. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title gilt to the spine, neatly recased, retains the original brown surface-paper endpapers, hinges in linen. Steel-engraved frontispiece. A little rubbed at the extremties, lower corner of the front board creased, light browning, but overall a well-restored, very good copy. First edition. This copy inscribed on the half-title, "From H.M. Durand Esqr." in the hand of the author's son, Henry Mortimer Durand, who completed his late father's work, and who became Lord Roberts's political secretary during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Beneath this inscription is a pencilled note, "Rec'd at Rome 3rd May 1874, Vincent Eyre". A superb association copy, sent by the author to perhaps the most famous of the Kabul Prisoners. Frequent marginal markings in pencil throughout the text. "A heavy, detailed account of British-Afghan relations preceding the war and of the war itself up to March of 1842. The auhtor spent many years in India as an army officer and administrator" (Wilber). Mounted recto and verso on the initial blank is a contemporary review beginning; "The literature of the first Afghan War has just been enriched by a work of very great and lasting value".
