"Wilfrid Noyce was the first member of the 1953 Everest expedition to accomplish the ascent of the South Col--the small plateau just below the summit--from which the successful party subsequently set out." This copy is signed on the half-title by nine expedition members: expedition leader John Hunt, Edmund Hilary, George Band, Michael Ward, Charles Wylie, Michael Westmacott, and George Lowe, also with the signatures of John Jackson of the expedition reserves and Jan Morris (at the time of the expedition James Morris) , Times correspondent with the expedition.
